Puglia: the secret treasure of Italy

(8 days/7 nights)

A journey through art, nature and history in the footsteps of Frederick II of Svevia (The Holy Roman Empire) in the land of sun, sea and wind. In addition to the major cultural attractions you can discover why Puglia is one of the best gay destinations in Italy.

Pomodoro 1 Arrival at the airport in Bari/Brindisi and transfer by deluxe bus to our Hotel in the Bari area. Dinner and presentation by the Pro.Italy tour guides taking the opportunity to know us better.

pomodoro 2 The Romanesque Pugliese. The tour begins with a visit to Bari, the regional capital and seat of the oldest European market "The Market of the Sun"; its characteristic historical centre of which stands the splendor of the Cathedral in the Romanesque style of the 11th century. Through the maze of the medieval streets, we reach the monumental complex of the Basilica of San Nicola, a place of pilgrimage for over 1000 years. Built in the 11th century during the Norman rule, the structure represents the prototype of the austere Romanesque churches in Puglia. In the afternoon we will visit Bitonto, with its medieval town centre and the beautiful Romanesque Cathedral. You will have the opportunity to see its incredible hidden treasures.

pomodoro 3 In the footsteps of Frederick II of Svevia. The tour begins with a visit to Trani, splendid seaside town that has conserved a beautiful historic centre, and famous monuments of Frederick II, the Castle and the magnificent Cathedral. Unique for its beauty and seaside location the Cathedral was built between the eleventh and twelfth century, in the typical rose colored stone. You then come to Castel del Monte, built by Emperor Frederick II, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the perfection of its forms and harmonious blend of cultural elements from northern Europe, the Islamic world and of the ancient classical styles. Finally Ruvo, where we can admire the magnificent Cathedral, which seems to combine the elements of Romanesque with Gothic elements that are typical of northern Europe.

pomodoro 4 The Salento. Leaving the hotel we will head towards the southern part of Puglia. A brief visit to Polignano a Mare will allow us to admire the medieval town built on cliffs overlooking the sea, inside which opens numerous and spectacular caves. Another short stop to visit a Romanesque church in the countryside, immersed in the silence of ancient olive trees, and the small peasant art museum. After a tasting of olive oil and typical products in a mill, we will arrive in Lecce with Hotel accommodations, dinner and a night tour to discover the nightlife of Lecce.

pomodoro 5 In the shadow of the Baroque. The day starts with a visit to Lecce, known as the "Florence of the South"; an explosion of flourished Baroque in the city considered one of the most beautiful in Italy. Beautiful palaces, splendid churches and quaint squares in the Baroque style, the work of sculptors who have been able to deftly work the typical local stone with a beautiful light yellow color. Tasting of wines from Salento (Negroamaro and Primitivo) and local products in a famous wine cellar. Finally, a visit to the city of Otranto, declared by UNESCO as "a messenger of peace". In its Cathedral, the western style is combined with the eastern Byzantine. You can admire the largest mosaic floor in the world of the eleventh century, which allegorically represents the tree of life, good and evil. Dinner at typical Masseria.

pomodoro 6 The fairy-tale world of the Trulli. The journey begins with a visit to the Valle d'Itria, Alberobello, famous worldwide for its houses: the Trulli. Construction of dry stone, unique, whose origin is lost in the mists of time but certainly from the East Turkish. Feel the thrill of visiting them on the inside. Then we'll continue to visit Martina Franca, a noble and elegant town, home of the Opera Festival. Finally Ostuni, known as the "white city", lies on a hilltop in an extraordinary panoramic position. There you will be lost among the white streets of the historic center of exquisite Mediterranean character. You will try the thrill of dining in a restaurant situated in the ancient ruins of a Basilian monastery.

pomodoro 7 The land of sun, sea and wind. The trip will be through the most southern part of Puglia. First stop Galatina, a quaint Salento's town with its beautiful old district. Here you can admire the Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria and the spectacular frescoes by the Giotto school. Then you reach Gallipoli, ancient Greek city built on an island in the sea. Its historic center is a maze of narrow streets structured to break the wind. Here we suggest a visit to one of the many oil mills, which produced oil designed to illuminate half of Europe. A spectacular tour of the Coast "Finibus Terrae" of overhanging cliffs, stone walls, olive trees and a turquoise sea. A traditional country dinner where we can enjoy fabulous local gastronomy. Night walking in Gallipoli to enjoy the hot nightlife of Salento.

pomodoro 8 Arrivederci Puglia. Transfer to the Bari/Brindisi Airport for your departure home.

Bike Tour in Salento

(7 days/6 nights)

(BIKING IN PUGLIA VIDEO)

Pomodoro 1 Arrive at the airport in Bari / Brindisi and transfer to Lecce by Deluxe Bus. Accommodation in 4 * Hotel. Welcome dinner at a restaurant in the historic center of the city. Presentation by the Pro.Italy tour guides, taking the opportunity to know us better.

pomodoro 2 In the shadow of the Baroque. The tour includes a visit to Lecce to a workshop of "papier mache", typical of the local crafts, followed by a tasting of local products at a characteristic place of the old town. After a short rest in the hotel, we will reach a wine cellar, where there will be a wine tasting accompanied by baked goods, and a visit to the Wine Museum Negroamaro; here they will illustrate the techniques of winemaking, aging and bottling of wines typical of the Salento : Primitivo and Negroamaro. Dinner at local restaurant near Lecce.

pomodoro 3 Bike tour Lecce-Acaya-Lecce (Km. 30). The tour provides a wonderful bike ride near Lecce to the Natural Reserve of "Le Cesine". These wetlands are of international interest and under the protection of the WWF, and one of the last remaining stretches of the vast marshes that once stretched in Puglia . There are several protected plant species, like the orchid lake, and numerous migratory and stationary animals such as red and white herons and gazette. On the way back, stop in the fortified village of Acaya with its beautiful Aragonese castle. Built by the architect Giangiacomo dell'Acaya for the Emperor Charles V, it represents a prime example of military architecture of the 1500 in Puglia. At the end of the tour, dinner at a "Masseria", with a show of "Pizzica", the typical folk dance of Salento.

pomodoro 4 The land of sun, sea and wind. Leave Lecce and the Hotel and head farther south. Luggages and bikes will be transported by bus to the hotel in the second part of our tour. First stop Gallipoli, city of the Ancient Greeks built on an island. The historic center of Gallipoli is connected to the mainland by a stone bridge of the seventeenth century. The castle, the walls and strong bastions, were constructed around the fifteenth century to defend the city from several attacks, especially from the Saracen pirates. In a maze of narrow streets, structured to break the wind, we can enjoy beautiful churches and stately palaces with arched alcove and wrought iron balconies. Visit one of the many underground olive mills where the oil for illumination was produced and transported with ships from Gallipoli across Europe. Leaving Gallipoli, we will tour the spectacular Coast "FinibusTerrae" of overhanging cliffs, stone walls, olive trees and a turquoise sea. Dinner and overnight in 4*Hotel near Otranto.

pomodoro 5 Bike tour Uggiano-Poggiardo-Uggiano (Km. 25). The tour includes an exhilarating bike ride in the typical Salentine countryside among olive trees, vineyards and dry stone. It will make a stop in the archaeological area of the Megalithic Park in Poggiardo to admire Dolmens and Menhirs. Stop for a buffet lunch in one of the most famous Botanical Gardens, which houses a unique collection of succulent plants from deserts from around the world. Return to hotel late in the afternoon for dinner.

pomodoro 6 Bike tour Uggiano-Otranto-Uggiano (Km. 25). Another pleasant ride to enjoy the beauty of this magnificent land. Destination of the tour is Otranto, a city declared by UNESCO a "messenger of peace". In its Cathedral, the western style is combined with the eastern byzantine. Here you can admire the largest mosaic floor in the world of the eleventh century, which allegorically represents the Tree of Life with the Good and the Evil. Otraanto, a city in the heart of the Mediterranean, but reaching out to the East, with the palms, the cube-shaped buildings with domes, the narrow, winding streets of a typical Mediterranean style. We will stop at the natural quarry of Bauxite, a surreal place for the red color of the earth, vegetation and a small natural lake. A stop at the Lighthouse Palascìa, the highest point East of Italy where you can see the mountains of Albania. Finally, a break with gourmet cheese and wine. Country style Dinner in a typical locale.

pomodoro 7 Arrivederci Salento. Transfer to the airport for your return trip home.
